Reuters – In the early hours of Saturday, shots are fired in Berlin-Kreuzberg. The police find several wounded. Heavily armed officers search for the perpetrators. The background is unclear.
A shooting in the Berlin district of Kreuzberg left several injured on Saturday (12.26.2020), three of them seriously. They were initially treated by emergency services at the scene, although those three required hospitalization, a fire department spokesman said.
Police had initially reported four injuries. Numerous heavily armed officers were deployed around the scene to search for those involved in the confrontation, both the wounded and the perpetrators, with the help of a police helicopter.
The shooting appears to have been at the entrance to Stresemannstraße, near the headquarters of the SPD party. Police cordoned off the area. Another injured man was taken out of the nearby Landwehr Canal, according to the first police reports with a leg injury apparently caused after jumping into the water.
Around the Möckernbrücke metro station, which is located directly on the Landwehrkanal, the police searched the wooded area along the shore with flashlights.
The motives for the shooting are not clear yet and no further information on the police operation has been provided. In Berlin there are frequent clashes between rival gangs or families. Recently, there was an attack by about 10 men in an apartment in Kreuzberg after a 29-year-old man was shot.
