CINCINNATI, Ohio, USA – Giovani Bernard scored two touchdowns in the first half after turnovers and the Cincinnati Bengals surprised the downcast Pittsburgh Steelers last night by beating them 27-17.
The Bengals (3-10-1) led 17-0 at halftime and survived a counterattack by the Steelers, who lost their third straight game after starting the season with 11 straight wins. Pittsburgh didn’t get a first down until the second period was past the middle.
Cincinnati snapped an 11-game losing streak against Pittsburgh in unlikely form, with Ryan Finley at quarterback. The sophomore, who started in place of the injured Joe Burrow, who was chosen in the first draft pick, completed seven passes for 89 yards, but it was his 23-yard touchdown run at the start of the final period that practically sealed the win for the Bengals.
It was the second big surprise in the NFL this weekend. Pittsburgh was a 14-point favorite, and the Los Angeles Rams led the betting by 17 before falling yesterday to the winless New York Jets.
