EFE – The Ministry of Economy and Finance (MEF) of Peru signed a contract with the German Development Bank KfW for 20 million euros (24.4 million dollars), coming from a donation from the German Government to finance the “Sustainability Project Financial of the Protected Areas of the northern Amazon biome “.
The Minister of Economy and Finance, Waldo Mendoza, indicated this Wednesday (12.23.2020) that the donation will contribute to improving the protection of biological diversity and the sustainable use of natural resources in ten protected natural areas of national administration and two areas of regional conservation.
These areas constitute a corridor that covers 43.9% of the total area of protected areas in the entire Amazon biome . The agreement has an execution period of five years and will allow the MEF to receive the donation, which will have as final recipient institutions such as the National Service of Natural Protected Areas by the State (Sernanp) and the Government of the Amazon region of Loreto through a Budget Support Agreement (CAP).
“These budgetary support agreements are incentives that will condition the transfer of financial resources to said entities based on the fulfillment of annual indicator goals, for two key interventions in containing deforestation,” Mendoza explained.
The head of the Development Cooperation section of the German Embassy, Florian Theus, added that this agreement “marks a milestone” in his country’s cooperation with Peru , since it is an innovative mechanism with which he hopes to contribute to the efforts for the protection of biodiversity through protected areas with effective management
