Justin Herbert set the record for most touchdown passes in a season for a rookie quarterback and Chargers from Los Angeles beat the Broncos in Denver 19-16 on Sunday in their third straight victory.
Michael Badgley tied his career high of four field goals, including the winning kick with 41 seconds left.
Herbert reached 28 touchdown passes on the season with a 9-yard throw to Austin Ekeler in the second period and surpassed Baker Mayfield’s 27 with Cleveland in 2018.
Herbert , the sixth pick in the April draft and the third quarterback selected, completed 21 of 33 passes for 253 yards. He also became the fourth player to throw more than 4,000 yards in his first year, an honor he shares with Andrew Luck, Cam Newton and Jameis Winston.
Badgley came into the game having made just three of his last seven field goal attempts, but he was perfect Sunday. After Brandon McManus tied the game with a field goal at 16 with 2:47 left, the Chargers (6-9) advanced to the 19-yard line and the third-year kicker won the game from the 37th.
Lock completed 24 of 47 passes for 264 yards. Melvin Gordon , who spent five seasons with the Chargers before signing with Denver in the preseason, had 79 rushing yards on 16 carries.
