Seven paramilitaries from Pakistan were killed in an attack on a checkpoint in the unstable Balochistan region, in the southwest of the country, the army announced today.
The attack took place on Saturday night in the small town of Harnai , about 170 kilometers east of Quetta , the capital of the province of Balochistan , bordering Afghanistan and Iran.
“During an intense shootout, seven brave soldiers fell martyrs while repelling the terrorists who attacked them,” the army said in a statement.
The attack has not yet been claimed.
An independentist rebellion has been opposed to the army in Balochistan for decades , where ‘ jihadist ‘ groups also operate .
Pakistan accuses India of supporting the separatists.
The rebellion has been particularly violent in recent years, with the appearance of the China-Pakistan Economic Corridor shipyards, in which Beijing is expected to invest more than $ 50 billion (€ 42 billion).
The project is targeted by separatists, who have taken responsibility for several attacks. Pakistani security forces have deployed thousands of soldiers to try to contain the violence.
