Unsung perennial challenger Gakuya Furuhashi (27-8-1, 15 KOs), 122, unexpectedly grabbed the Japanese super-bantam belt as he scored a come-from-behind TKO victory over highly regarded Yusaku Kuga (19-5-1, 13 KOs), 122, at 0:24 of the ninth session in Tokyo, Japan on Friday, in his third attempt in search of the national belt.
The fleet-footed challenger, 33, displayed his undaunted resolve and impressive stamina in turning the tables in a double national title go, when he caught the prohibitive favorite Kuga, 30, with a damaging right and badly had him lose his balance. The ref stopped the proceedings and, before several Kuga adherents, lifted the underdog’s shoulder.
