He was also highly praised for his romantic friendship with his beloved 54-year-old wife, Sandra, in addition to being recognised and respected by many football fans.
But Harry Redknapp, 73, admitted that fans thought he was cheating on his beautiful wife when he hid in a hotel in Australia ahead of his I’m A Celebrity stint… Only get me out of here! In 2018, home.
The former Tottenham Hotspur boss shared that he was chaperoned by a lady named Tina when he spent a week locked away, sharing the experience with former contestant Mark Wright on his The Harry Redknapp Show podcast.
He recalled: ‘It’s a silly thing, you’re with her and you’re in a hotel miles and miles [away] in the middle of nowhere.
‘And there’s people over there in Australia on holiday and they’re from England and they see you, like, “Hello Harry, how you doing? We’re big Spurs fans.”
And I’m with this bird and they’re thinking, “She ain’t Sandra – what are you doing in this motel in the middle of nowhere?”
Harry went on to reveal that he asked his chaperone Tina if they could eat out at an Italian restaurant of his choosing as he didn’t like the hotel’s food.
After learning the eatery was full, he was recognised by the owner, who offered him a bottle of wine, before asking: ‘And your wife, what does your wife like to drink?’
Quickly correcting the mistake, Harry recalled: ‘[I said] “No, she’s not my wife”.’
However, the correction only served to make things all the more confusing, as the restaurateur replied: ‘Harry don’t worry, I’m a man of the world, no problem.’
The former West Ham manager went on: ‘Every night I go in there and he goes, “Harry [makes cheering noise]”.’
He recalled responding to the man: ‘”No you don’t understand”, while strictly confidentiality agreements prevented him from sharing the specifics.
