Cape Town – Bonginkosi Madikizela, Western Cape MEC for Transport and Public Works, has condemned taxi violence and requested that the hitmen be identified. This comes after three people were shot and killed on Tuesday in Bellville and a fourth person was wounded. SAPS Spokesperson André Traut announced on Wednesday that a triple murder was being investigated.

The circumstances that led to the death of three people in what we suspect was a taxi-related incident yesterday afternoon on the Voortrekker and Charl Malan roads in Bellville are being investigated by provincial detectives. One bystander was also injured in the hospital and is recovering. At this point, the identities of the victims are not disclosed,’ said Traut. He said that a 32-year-old man had been detained and was being interviewed. Two stolen weapons were recovered for further investigation and three licensed firearms were seized, Traut added.

On Tuesday, ER24 spokesman Russel Meiring said that in a shooting incident off Voortrekker Road in Belville, Western Cape, two people were killed and two others were seriously wounded. ‘ER24 paramedics arrived on the scene, along with other personnel, to find the local authorities already present. There were four individuals found lying on the pavement. Medics examined the patients and discovered that their multiple bullet wounds had already caused two to succumb. There was little that could be done for them and they were pronounced dead,’ said Meiring.

Madikizela said that on Wednesday, an intergovernmental group of officials from his department, the South African Police Service (SAPS), the Community Safety Department, the City of Cape Town, the National Prosecuting Authority (NPA) and others met to agree on a coordinated meeting.
