Cape Town – Former transport minister Dipuo Peters required the ANC to investigate allegations that R80 million was obtained by the governing party from a company hired by the SAA Passenger Rail Agency (Prasa). On Tuesday, Peters told the State Capture Investigation Commission that the allegations arose when former Prasa Chairman Dr Popo Molefe filed an affidavit in the agency’s fight with Swifambo over the R3.5 billion locomotive delivery contract in August 2015. “If I were the Treasurer-General of the ANC, I would also investigate those individuals who are said to have received money on behalf of the ANC,” she said. It is incorrect for individuals to go around getting money in the name of the ANC, according to Peters.

She said that she did not know whether the ANC had investigated the matter or not. Peters testified that Molefe had informed her that Swifambo director Auswell Mashaba had told him that he was aware that Prasa was investigating the matter. She said that Molefe had told her that Mashaba was in touch with Maria da Cruz Gomes, an Angolan businesswoman, who said she wanted to donate money to the movement. The commission learned that Gomes decided to go to the ANC for 10% of the bid, and the money would be useful to the movement.
