Johannesburg – Hillbrow High School Matric Achievement said there were times during her matric year when she was thinking about giving up, but her determination to achieve her goals kept her going. Yamkela Skosana of Hillbrow St Enda’s Secondary School told The Star that she initially felt scared when her teaching moved from face-to-face teaching to online learning because she didn’t believe in herself.
Because I didn’t believe in myself and I was very scared, it was very difficult. “I couldn’t concentrate because I had to learn online by myself and we couldn’t attend classes very much, so it was scary,” said the enrollee. m”It was very hard to concentrate and I sometimes thought about giving up, but at the end of the day, I knew what I wanted and I had to keep my clear goal in mind,” said the 18-year-old. Skosana, who lives in Tembisa, said it was difficult to study at high school in her final year because she lives far from her school and if she needed school materials, it was a long distance to travel. She said when she studied remotely at home she felt pressure to do well in her matric year.
The young woman said she was planning to graduate from the University of Witwatersrand with a Bachelor of Health Sciences in Biomedical Sciences this year because it is one of the best universities in the country. She said that she wanted to study at Wits because there was a strong Faculty of Health Science at the university in Braamfontein. She said, “I’m still a little scared and I don’t really believe in myself yet because I don’t know my results and I don’t know whether or not I’ve gotten in yet, but I want to study, I have to.”
Due to her love of physical science and her interest in medicine, Skosana told The Star that she was interested in studying biomedical science. The student said 2020 taught her that knowing what you want and following through and going for exactly what you want is important. “Sometimes you can be motivated by people, but you are the only individual who will push yourself and work towards what you want,” she said.
