In the midst of heavy security and strict COVID-19 protocols, the counting of votes for 575 seats in six municipal corporations of Gujarat is underway: Ahmedabad, Surat, Vadodara, Rajkot, Bhavnagar and Jamnagar.
The BJP appears on course to maintain power in six municipal corporations, according to the latest results, winning 451 out of a total of 575 seats. Although Congress has won 44 of the declared seats so far, the new entrant in these elections, the Aam Aadmi Party (AAP), has made remarkable headway by winning 19 seats so far.
The BJP currently governs all these bodies. While the BJP has an upper hand in elections for urban local bodies, several senior and multi-term corporations have been denied tickets this time, leading to party disquiet. These elections will provide an indicator of the voters’ mood with the Assembly elections due next year.
