Feb. 22 – Mexican drug cartel leader Joaquin ‘El Chapo’ Guzman’s wife was arrested on Monday on charges of drug trafficking, federal authorities said. The Justice Department reported in a statement that Emma Coronel Aispuro, 31, was arrested at Dulles International Airport near Washington, D.C. on charges of engaging in a plot to sell cocaine, methamphetamine, heroin and marijuana to be smuggled into the United States and allegedly conspiring to help Guzman escape from jail.
The criminal complaint unsealed Monday states that the father of Coronel Aispuro was a member of the Sinaloa Cartel that Guzman led when she was a teenager and the couple were married. It also alleges that she was conscious of cocaine and marijuana multi-ton shipments, heroin multi-kilo production and methamphetamine ton quantity shipments and understood the drug profits she managed while married to Guzman.
After a three-year trial in which he was accused of conspiracy to commit murder, cocaine trafficking and money laundering, Guzman, 62, was sentenced to spend the remainder of his life in prison in December 2019. Coronel Aispuro was accused of working for Guzman and the cartel as a “go-between and messenger” by relaying messages linked to the cartel while he was in prison.’I further understand that Guzman continued to control the Sinaloa Cartel’s drug trafficking operations from Altiplano prison through a variety of individuals, including Coronel,’ notes the complaint.
Guzman has fled Mexican prisons twice and the lawsuit alleges that she agreed to assist in planning the construction of a 1,600-yard escape tunnel. In addition, the complaint claims that after he was released to jail, Coronel Aispuro paid a former cartel member $1 million to carry out another escape and told the member that a Mexican official had been paid $2 million in bribes to encourage a move back to Altiplano from another prison.
