When a system he was constructing for a gender disclosure party exploded, an expectant father was killed.
Christopher Pekny, 28, was assembling a device in the Catskills town of Liberty for his child’s gender disclosure party when it exploded just before noon on Sunday, New York police said.
The blast killed Pekny and wounded his 27-year-old brother, Michael Pekny, police said. Michael Pekny was treated at an area hospital for his injuries.
“the freakiest of freak accidents that I could ever imagine.”
The death is the latest in a series of tragedies blamed in recent years on defective gender disclosure devices.
Earlier this month, a Michigan man was killed when he was hit by shrapnel from a gender disclosure cannon being used in a baby shower, authorities said.
Another device to disclose gender ignited a wildfire in Southern California in September 2020 that burned thousands of acres. A firefighter died while fighting the flames.
