Shubh Mangal Zyada Saavdhan, Bollywood star Ayushmann Khurrana, who has delivered seven back-to-back clean hits and a moderate success with his last outing, has carved his name as a risk-taking hero in the history of cinema who is constantly trying his best to normalize taboo subjects through his unusual, quirky, stereotypical films.

Ayushmann Khurrana talks about why the industry needs to continually create such eye-opening films on the first anniversary of Shubh Mangal Zyada Saavdhan, a quirky take on myths surrounding same-sex relationships in India. Taboo subjects need to be discussed regularly in our cinema, because it can really help to change people’s mindsets.

To normalize taboo topics and bring about constructive changes in culture takes a lot of time and effort. I’m glad that through Shubh Mangal Zyada Saavdhan, we tried to contribute to make the discourse about same-sex relationships in India mainstream. If it had an effect on people’s minds, then we did our job,’ says Ayushmann, who became the first popular hero to produce a hit film on same-sex relationships and to play a gay man on screen as well.

He continues, “The fact that the film became a (moderate) success told me that people want to engage with such important topics and have a conversation.” The biggest success story for me was the fact that Indian families came out and watched this film because our families can contribute so much to cultivating a spirit of inclusivity when it comes to same-sex relationships.

Ayushmann Khurrana was thrilled that the film was working with an audience segment because the industry told him not to do Shubh Mangal Zyada Saavdhan. I was thrilled with the response to this film,” he says, “because everyone told me that I was making a really tricky film and that nobody would consider that kind of film. Instead, with that gratitude, I was humbled.

This film’s achievement lies in how it was embraced as a commercial film and how it has hopefully done its job to pave a way for many more films to be made on such subjects. The star adds, “It has always been my endeavor to bring out such discussions in the open and to do my part to create a society of forward thinking.

” I have always wanted to reach out and have a discussion about the things I have discussed through my films with people. Rest assured, since it satisfies me as an artist and motivates me to explore more subjects like these, I will continue to do that. Keep pushing the envelope. Good for you, Ayushmann.
