Feb. 22 (UPI) — Luca Attanasio, Italy’s ambassador to the Democratic Republic of the Congo, was one of many people killed during a U.N. convoy assault there on Monday, officials said.Attanasio was part of a team traveling from Goma near the eastern border of the DRC to the Rutshuru World Food Program site about 40 miles away when the attack took place, the United Nations said. Also killed in the attack was Vittorio Iacovacci, a member of the Italian Carabinieri police force, along with a member of the World Food Program.

Several militias are known to frequent the region, the United Nations said, but no group immediately claimed responsibility for the attack.”[We] will work with national authorities to determine the details behind the attack, which occurred on a road that had previously been cleared for travel without security escorts,” the World Food Program said in a statement. Attanasio, 43, has been Italy’s ambassador to the DRC since 2019 and, since 2017, has led Rome’s mission to Kinshasa, the Congolese capital. The DRC has the second highest number of displaced people in the world (5.2 million) and is home to approximately 527,000 refugees from other nations.
