For the upcoming Western Australian referendum, postal voting applications have nearly doubled from what they were four years ago and are projected to rise even higher.
More than 215,000 people have already registered for early voting by post, but WA electoral commissioner Robert Kennedy says that before postal voting applications close on Wednesday, March 10, that number could reach up to 400,000.
Up to 70 percent of voters are prepared by the electoral commission to cast their ballot papers before polling day, including pre-polling at polling booths.
The spike in early votes means that you can get your sausage from democracy much faster than you did in previous years, but it won’t necessarily speed up how easily votes are counted.
