BANGKOK – After having contacted positive coronaviral cases, at least ten Thai Cabinet ministers and dozens of legislators were autoisolated on Wednesday (April 7), as the infections in the Bangkok capital increased rapidly.
Transport Minister Saksiam Chidchob said on local television he had tested for Covid-19 on Wednesday, while his Bhumjaithai Party had reported on contact with confirmed cases for other ministers, legislators and coalition politicians.Thailand has seen infections jump over the past week, but, due to more than a year’s rigid border controls, quarantine, testing and contact tracking protocols, it is still low in terms of numbers compared to some of its regional neighbors.
On Wednesday, 334 new infections were reported by the authorities without new deaths and a total of 29,905 deaths were reported for Thailand.
Premier Chan-o-cha turned his 36-member Cabinet on weekdays and called on Ministers to avoid exposure to the virus, and he took a virtual meeting on Wednesday.In Thai New Year’s Eve next week, where crowds traditionally gather across the country, he stated that the public should exercise care.
It is prohibited to prevent a severe contagion this year to avoid the boisterous holiday tradition of many people clutching on the streets to sweep water.
Two week after clusters emerged, more than 250 people were infected with the virus, the Bangkok authorities closed 196 entertainment centers in three districts of Bangkok.Thailand aims to start a mass immunization campaign in June, with more than 200,000 recipients now, according to the Ministry of Health, vaccinating medical workers or those considered vulnerable.
In the context of the calibrated reopening for foreign tourists, authorities are also vaccinating with the public at Phuket, a holiday home.
