Norwich City’s Championship title celebrations were put on hold after Watford beat them 1-0 away on Tuesday, putting them on the verge of automatic promotion to the Premier League.
Watford moved nine points clear of third-placed Swansea with three games remaining and a vastly superior goal difference thanks to Dan Gosling’s 57th-minute goal.
Norwich have 90 points to Watford’s 85, with Swansea on 76 points with three games remaining after losing 1-0 to Queens Park Rangers at the Liberty Stadium.
Lyndon Dykes scored his sixth goal in seven games in the 89th minute to send QPR to eighth place.
Brentford’s slim chances of automatic promotion were all but dashed as they were held to a 1-1 draw at home by Cardiff City, continuing their poor form.
With four games remaining, the Bees, who had a late-season collapse before losing to Fulham in the playoff final last season, have 75 points, with Bournemouth on 74 and Barnsley on 71.
Last-but-one Sheffield Wednesday beat Blackburn 1-0 to avoid relegation for another day, while Wayne Rooney’s Derby County remained in danger after a 3-0 thrashing at Preston.
Derby are four points clear of Rotherham United, who have three games in hand, and Sheffield Wednesday, whose season was saved by Josh Windass’ deflected winner.
Wycombe Wanderers are in the relegation zone, five points adrift of Wednesday.
