Barcelona has cut 12 points off Atletico Madrid’s lead in LaLiga Santander in the last two months, dropping just two points in their last ten games compared to Diego Simeone’s 14.

Now, Ronald Koeman’s side are only one point behind Los Rojiblancos in the LaLiga Santander table, and it appears that Barcelona has become the new favourites to win the league. Furthermore, they will face Real Madrid in the season’s second Clasico on Saturday at the Estadio Alfredo Di Stefano.

Barcelona is finding a way to win games, as evidenced by their last-gasp winner against Real Valladolid on Monday night. Atletico has had a rough patch of late, most recently losing 1-0 away at Sevilla last Sunday. The Valladolid victory was marred by controversy, however, due to a penalty that was not awarded to Jordi Alba and a highly dubious red card for Oscar Plano in the final ten minutes of the game, when the score was 0-0.

Simeone’s Atletico: 16 points out of 30

Los Colchoneros have won four times, drawn four times, and lost two times in their last ten league games, dropping 14 points in the process.

Barcelona, on the other hand, has been a domestic machine in recent months, closing the gap on Atletico Madrid by 12 points. They are now only one point behind and in control of the championship.

The Blaugrana’s only loss in their last ten games came at the hands of Cadiz, who scored a stoppage-time penalty after a mistake by Clement Lenglet. The other nine have been won by them.

“Everything has been the result of hard work,” Lenglet said after the Valladolid victory.

“We’ve worked very hard over the last few months. At the beginning it didn’t work out the way we wanted it to, but now it has.”

Barcelona will face Real Madrid on Saturday, but they will be in their best form of the season in terms of results.
