The Muslim holy month of Ramadan is set to begin on Tuesday, April 13 this year. Depending on where you are in the country, the pre-sunrise to sunset quick will last anywhere from 10 to 21 hours.

To attain greater “taqwa,” or God consciousness, the fast requires abstinence from eating, drinking, smoking, and sexual intercourse.

Every year, Ramadan starts 10 to 12 days earlier. This is due to the Islamic calendar’s use of the lunar “Hijri” calendar, which has 29 to 30 day months. The next time Ramadan begins about April 13 will be in the year 2054, which is 33 years from now.

From country to country, the number of daylight hours varies. Muslims in the world’s southernmost nations, such as Chile or New Zealand, will fast for 11 hours on average, while those in the north, such as Iceland or Norway, will fast for 18 hours or more.

The number of fasting hours for Muslims in the Northern Hemisphere will be slightly reduced this year and will continue to decline until 2032, when Ramadan will fall on the winter solstice – the year’s shortest day. Then, before the summer solstice – the longest day of the Northern year – fasting hours would increase. The same would happen for Muslims living south of the equator.
