A major blow has been dealt to Barcelona ahead of the upcoming El Clasico match against Real Madrid.
According to Diario AS, Gerard Pique did not train on Tuesday because El Mundo Deportivo stated that if he was to play this weekend, he would have to play through the pain barrier.
The former Spain central defender had been expected to return to action after the current international break and had been on track to do so, according to El Mundo Deportivo, which reported last week that he had returned to training.
Pique has been plagued by knee injuries in recent months, and he suffered a new setback in Barcelona’s Copa del Rey semi-final remontada victory over Sevilla, but his prolonged absence has been noted in the media.
However, he is now experiencing more pain in his right knee, and it was reported that his chances of appearing this weekend were dwindling.
In a loss to Atletico Madrid in November, the central defender suffered a long-term knee injury, and his return to the team in February was weeks, if not months, ahead of schedule.
In the original injury, the former Spain international had a grade 3 sprain of the medial lateral ligament and a partial injury to the anterior cruciate ligament in his right knee.
According to the latest reports, the Catalan giants will likely wait until the very last minute to decide whether or not Pique will be included in the matchday squad.
The experienced defender’s next goal, however, is to return for the Copa final against Athletic Bilbao the following week.
