Voters in four Indian states and a union territory are voting in elections seen as a litmus test for Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s administration, which is fighting a hard battle against the country’s recent coronavirus outbreak.

On Tuesday, news outlets showed voters wearing masks as officials monitored temperatures and attempted to keep lines physically separated.

As polls opened in Assam, West Bengal, Kerala, and Tamil Nadu states, as well as the federally administered territory of Puducherry, Modi urged people, especially young voters, to “vote in record numbers.”

Modi’s Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) is hoping to establish a foothold in the northeast and south with these elections.
