JAKARTA – The first case of a more communicable new coronavirus variant known to reduce the vaccine protection was reported in Indonesia, but on Tuesday (April 6) the government stated that the vaccines being used in the country can resist this mutation.
The new variant includes the E484K mutation first found in South Africa and Brazil.
Some scientists call it “Eek” because it seems to be capable of evading natural immunity from previous infection with Covid-19 and reducing the protection provided by current vaccines.Siti Siti The senior health official Nadia Tarmizi told the variety case on Tuesday that the vaccine currently available in Indonesia could withstand the mutation and didn’t infect close contacts.
However, the vaccines must yet be identified, Herawati Sudoyo, Senior Director for Fundamental Research at the Eijkman Institute, a government-funded institute dedicated to medical molecular biology and biotechnology.
The first example of this variant comes as the country prepares for reduced supply of vaccines Covid-19 because of the AstraZeneca export restrictions imposed on its domestic supplies by manufacturer India.
Indonesia’s Minister of Health said that only 20 million out of 30 million doses ordered for delivery from March to April had been available on Monday (April 5).
He called for the revision and prioritization of the vaccination program for the elderly.
Indonesia is the most vulnerable in South East Asia and one of the worst epidemics in Asia, with some 1,54 million cases and 41,900 deaths to date.
Its immunization program aims at inoculating 181 million people and relies heavily on vaccines from China’s Sinovac because the AstraZeneca vaccine is delayed in shipment.
