A long bank holiday weekend is ideal for working on a project. Consider putting up some shelves, organizing your drawers, cleaning the tent you’ve had sitting around since the summer, or constructing networks of road, rail, water, and air transportation to move people and goods around the world for fun and benefit. If the last suggestion appeals to you, you’re in luck. The excellent open-source remake of Transport Tycoon Deluxe, OpenTTD, is now also available on Steam for free.

A Steam release is primarily for convenience (and to combat undersupported unofficial releases), but who knows, maybe it will also introduce more people to the game. It’s been dubbed one of the best construction games and one of the best management games. Would the combination of those categories make it one of the best gaffer games?

Although the official statement is that “OpenTTD is not an abbreviation of something,” the Steam page clearly states that it is “an open-source remake and expansion of the 1995 Chris Sawyer video game Transport Tycoon Deluxe.” I suppose a lingustic shrug is enough to escape the wrath of lawyers? OpenTTD builds on the original with larger maps, more building options, improved multiplayer, and a slew of useful new features and quality-of-life enhancements, in addition to supporting modern systems.

OpenTTD is available for free on Steam for Windows, Mac, and Linux. Alternatively, you can get it from its website, as usual. The source code is also available on GitHub.

To import its art and sound, OpenTTD originally needed a copy of Transport Tycoon Deluxe, but the project now has its own non-copyrighted alternatives. So, just download and play – though if you have TTD, you can import the original art.

The developers have launched a new update to coincide with the Steam launch. Version 1.11 improves consistency, enhances the Mac version, and fixes and tweaks a variety of issues. For more details, see the v1.11 changelog.
