This evening, Real Madrid welcomed Liverpool to the Spanish capital in the Champions League, in the type of match that the club’s reputation is built on. This isn’t a vintage Madrid, but they do know how to win, and they did just that. They won 3-1 thanks to Vinicius Junior’s brace and Marco Asensio’s goal, with Mo Salah’s effort serving as a mere consolation.
Madrid got off to a good start, playing with control and confidence, and were rewarded when they took the lead in the 27th minute. Toni Kroos played a key role in the build-up, but it was Vinicius who put the finishing touches on the move. Things got even worse for Liverpool less than ten minutes later, when Asensio got in on the act and doubled Madrid’s lead, effectively putting the Reds on the back foot.
However, the game was far from over, and Liverpool equalized shortly after the second half began. After excellent work by Gini Wijnaldum, it was Mo Salah who struck the decisive blow, finishing from close range. However, their comeback was short-lived, as Vinicius quickly restored the two-goal advantage, deflating the Liverpool ballon and securing a crucial first-leg victory for Zinedine Zidane’s side.
