On Sunday, Atletico Madrid will travel to Seville under pressure to maintain their league-leading position against a Real Betis side fighting for a fifth-place finish. According to Diario AS, Diego Simeone knows how difficult it can be to face Betis, as his team lost to the Andalusians two seasons ago due to a Sergio Canales penalty. Simeone is a big fan of Canales, and Atletico Madrid has been linked with the Cantabrian on several occasions.
When Canales finished his first season at the Benito Villamarin in the summer of 2019, the interest was at an all-time high. Betis, on the other hand, were quick to raise his salary and extend his contract until 2023, putting an end to any potential ruckus. Canales had a fantastic end to 2020 and start to 2021, and despite a slight drop in performance in recent weeks, he remains a valuable member of this Betis squad.
Betis will be in need of cash at the end of the season, and Canales, according to Diario AS, could be an ideal player to profit from. In the summer of 2018, the Cantabrian joined on a free transfer from Real Sociedad. With only 30 years on the clock, there should be no shortage of suitors for the midfielder’s services.
