No one could have predicted the disaster that would follow: Yolanda’s murder of Selena when she was just 23 years old. Yolanda has 5 important things to remember, according to HollywoodLife.
1. Yolanda murdered Selena on March 31, 1995.
Yolanda had been in charge of Selena’s fan club and boutiques, and her family had uncovered financial irregularities. Yolanda’s employment with the Quintanilla family had recently been terminated. On March 31, 1995, Selena convened a meeting at the Days Inn Motel in Corpus Christi, Texas, to confront Yolanda. Yolanda said she had been raped and wanted Selena to meet her at the motel, according to sources.
During their battle, Yolanda brought a gun and shot Selena in the back. Selena made it all the way to the lobby before collapsing. She was rushed to the hospital, but she died shortly after. Before leaving her lung, the bullet shattered an artery in her collarbone, causing substantial blood loss.
2. Yolanda was once Selena’s fan club president.
After contacting Selena’s father, Abraham Quintanilla, about starting a fan club, the former nurse became the president. She eventually became the manager of Selena’s clothing boutiques, and she and Selena’s family became close friends.
3. Selena’s final words identified Yolanda as her killer.
Selena dashed into the motel lobby after being shot and told several workers that Yolanda had shot her.
“I asked who shot her. She said the lady in Room 158. She moaned. Her eyes rolled up,” the motel’s assistant manager, Rosalinda Gonzalez, said in court, according to AP. Shawna Vela, a front desk clerk, admitted that Selena told her, “Lock the door! She’ll shoot me again.” Yolanda was arrested after a 9.5-hour standoff with police.
4. Yolanda is now serving a life sentence in prison.
Yolanda’s trial was held in October of 1995. She said she had wanted to use the gun on herself and pleaded not guilty. Yolanda was found guilty by a jury on October 24, 1995, in less than three hours. She was found guilty of first-degree murder and given a life sentence with no chance of parole until March 2025. The 60-year-old is currently incarcerated in Gatesville, Texas, in a women’s jail.
5. The actress playing in ‘Selena: The Series’ worries for her safety.
Natasha Perez plays Yolanda in the Netflix series. “The actress in me is fascinated by the journey of a complex character, but the human in me has all sorts of feelings. The actress in me is also worried for her safety,” she told EW. “A lot of people take this very seriously and think that it’s real, and in this case, the character is real, but it’s not me. I’m not her.”
