The move may cast doubt on the planned Olympic Summer Games.
According to the Yomiuri newspaper, officials tended to extend the actions of Tokyo, Osaka, Kyoto and Hyogo beyond 11 May as the country battles an upsurge in cases of Covid-19.Extension of the measures imposed on 25 April is likely to give rise to persistent concerns about the possibilities for the Tokyo Olympics scheduled to start on 23 July.
The games were delayed because of the pandemic once since last year. On Wednesday the town of Sapporo was host to a half-marathon test event on the northern island of Hokkaido.
The Yomiuri reported without quotas, that Japanese Prime Minister Yoshihide Suga will meet senior ministers on Wednesday to discuss extensions. The Yomiuri did not detail how long an extension could be, but according to domestic media, the governor of Osaka Prefecture stated the need for an extension of three weeks to a month.
Reuters calls to the office of Mr Suga have not been replied to. On Wednesday for annual Golden Week holidays, the Japanese government building and financial markets were closed down. The government requested the closure of restaurants, bars and karaoke parlours in Tokyo and other urban areas. Wide department stores and movie theaters were shut down, whilst spectators were prohibited from major sporting events.
