Over the past 24 hours, India has recorded nearly 380,000 new coronavirus cases, the highest daily increase in the country’s history.
In the last day, the country has seen 379,259 new infections, and more than one million in the last three days.
According to official estimates, the nation of 1.4 billion people has over 18 million cases in total.
According to data from the Ministry of Health, there were 3645 new deaths today.
According to CNN, it was the eighth day in a row that the total number of cases surpassed 300,000.
At least 204,832 people have died in India as a result of the pandemic, making it the fourth country after the United States, Brazil, and Mexico to surpass 200,000 deaths.
However, the true death toll in India is thought to be much higher than what is being published.
Just before the pandemic, mortality data was lacking, with the majority of people dying at home and their deaths sometimes going unnoticed.
The practice is especially common in rural areas, where the virus is rapidly spreading.
This may explain why there have been fewer deaths in this country than in Brazil and Mexico, both of which have smaller populations and fewer confirmed COVID-19 cases.
Although calculating precise figures in a pandemic is difficult, experts claim officials were caught off guard by a massive surge in recent weeks due to an overreliance on official data that did not represent the true extent of infections.
India began its vaccination campaign on January 16 and will begin offering vaccines to everyone over the age of 18 on May 1, according to CNN.
It has distributed over 150 million vaccines, but only 3% of the population is completely vaccinated.
India is a country in South Asia.
