Image Source: The Straits Times -A man riding in a crowded MRT train constantly disturbed a 36-year-old male passenger as the latter looked good and was willing to draw his attention. 43-year-old Raymond Tan Guan Teng was convicted of two counts of maltreatment on Friday (April 30), and sentenced to five months in prison.

Two other charges of molestation involving the same victim were taken into account during the conviction.Due to a gag order to protect its identity, the victim cannot be named.

Deputy public prosecutor Goh Yong Ngee stated that on Feb 25 of last year, at around 7.40am, the victim had boarded the train in Choa Chu Kang station and about 30 minutes later, he had entered the same car in the Canberra station.

Then the two men stood close. A Singaporean, Tan felt appealing to the younger man to touch his left buttock with his right hand. The victim saw Tan’s bag slipped across his right shoulder and assumed that he had brushed him at first. The court heard Tan touched the left buttock of the man again.

The DPP said: “The complainant felt uncomfortable… looked down and only saw the accused’s sling bag. The complainant then shifted his body to create space between himself and the accused.”

Tan moved nigh undeterred and touched again the man’s left buttock. The victim, who was outraged, shifted his body to the packed train for the second time. When Tan touched the man’s genitals at 8.30am, the train was at Bishan Station.
DPP Goh told the court: “The complainant felt outraged… took half a step backwards and covered his crotch with his hands… The complainant was stunned and continued looking straight at the train door.”

When the victim came to the next stop, the station at Braddell, Tan also got off to talk to him. The documents in the Court do not disclose what was next, but late that morning the victim submitted a police report. After watching the closed-circuit camera footage, officers arrested Tan two days later.
On Friday, DPP Goh urged the court to sentence him to at least six months’ jail, stressing that the acts of molestation “escalated in their intrusiveness as time passed”.

He added: “The accused’s offences took place over a half-an-hour train ride, during which he made unwelcome advances towards the victim… He started by brushing the victim’s buttock… and then finally touching the victim’s private parts.”

For each count of molestation, an offender can be jailed for up to two years and fined or caned.
