Getting back into the game after the first one

Bungie announced last night that the Vault Of Glass raid from Destiny 1 will return in Destiny 2 on May 22nd. They also have some good news for those interested in trying out the ultra-hard raid race Challenge Mode, which is only available for the first day: you won’t need to grind a ton to reach the Power cap. In fact, you might not need to grind at all because you’re already there. Given that hard Destiny is some of the best Destiny, I strongly advise you to try it.

This Week aired last night. Bungie has announced that the Vault raid will begin on Saturday, May 22nd, at 10 a.m. Pacific (6 p.m. UK time). For the first 24 hours, it will run under the Contest Mode rules, which will make the race for the World’s First title more difficult. Basically, everyone has been forced to lower their level. However, while recent raid races have necessitated a lot of grinding to reach the Power cap, many players are already at or near the cap for Vault Of Glass’s race, which is only 1300 Power. I’ve been 1310 for weeks, mate.

The raid race is something I’m looking forward to. I don’t expect to be a serious raider’s matchmaker, but I do enjoy the Contest Mode. I’ve previously written about how difficult some of my favorite Destiny content is, such as raid races and Grandmaster Nightfalls. I tried the last few raid races and never made it past the first 24 hours, but I had a great time.

I’m relieved to see Destiny’s Power grind has been reduced. The Power cap will be raised by only ten points, to 1320, next season, but I had expected the raid race to find a new way to be cruel. Bungie can’t seem to stay away from the grind.

Bungie, on the other hand, has some new challenges. While the raid’s story remains the same, Bungie says “you may notice other differences” and that “some updates have been made to bring this content up to Destiny 2 standards.” Because most people are familiar with the raid, the race will entail completing it and then returning to complete it while ticking off a list of difficult Triumphs.

Season 14, still referred to as “Season Of [Redacted]” by Bungie, is set to premiere on May 11th. Its origins are unknown, but rumors suggest it has something to do with Vex or SIVA. I, for one, have no faith in rumors. It’ll also bring back Ada-1 to run Destiny 2’s new transmogrification system, which had been my most-anticipated feature for months – until Bungie revealed it’s a huge faff with multiple crafting materials and grinding bounties and a seasonal cap and… god, I just want to play dress-up, why do you have to make it so difficult?

The TWAB post also mentioned that the new season will bring some balance changes. Linear Fusion Rifles will be less useless (though I’m not sure if this will actually make them useful), 450rpm Auto Rifles will be boosted, and short-range Fusion Rifles will be more powerful. Hipfire Grip, Subsistence, Unrelenting, Sympathetic Arsenal, Dragonfly (they’re reducing the annoying delay that causes explosions to fail frequently), and No Distractions are among the gun perks and mods getting buffs. The modifications appear to be beneficial. They’re also working on making Osmosis compatible with Stasis, so you can have a gun that shoots Stasis. More information on everything can be found in the post.
