One of the league’s best left tackles is on the mend.
Trent Williams had his knee drained and will miss the rest of the week, according to 49ers coach Kyle Shanahan. Shanahan gave no indication that there was any reason to believe Williams will be unable to play in Week 1.
Williams was named the league’s best tackle in 2020, his first season with the San Francisco 49ers after a contract dispute with the Washington Redskins concluded in a trade that took him west. He was a rock-solid protector for whoever was at quarterback, and he was even better in the run game, according to Pro Football Focus, with the top run-blocking grade in the league.
Williams was rewarded with a six-year, $138 million contract in March. He’s an important element of San Francisco’s offense, so taking it easy now, with only a few weeks till the regular season begins, seems like a good idea.
