With the news that Erik McCoy will be sidelined for a while due to a calf strain, the New Orleans Saints signed veteran center Austin Reiter to test out alongside several other free agents. According to Houston Texans beat reporter Aaron Wilson and NewOrleans.com, he performed well enough to win a seat on the Saints practice squad this week. Nick Underhill is a football player.
The acquisition of Reiter was not shown in Tuesday’s update to the daily NFL transactions wire, which simply means the Saints failed to submit the contract in time to make the cut. It should be included in the wire update on Wednesday. The Saints plan to promote Reiter for Week 2’s game against the Carolina Panthers before relegating him to the practice squad, according to Wilson. After this week, they’ll assess McCoy’s rehabilitation and make a decision.
Guard Cole Banwart, tackle Coy Cronk, and centers Michal Menet and Spencer Pulley were among the offensive linemen who tested out with Reiter. Reiter was the most accomplished of the group, but it’s clear that the Saints wanted to assess him against his peers before making a decision.
