Jan Hecker, the German ambassador to China, died unexpectedly on Monday, two weeks into his assignment in Beijing, according to German officials.
According to the German Foreign Ministry, Hecker’s death date and cause of death are unknown. Hecker formerly served as the diplomatic and security adviser to German Chancellor Angela Merkel.
He leaves behind a wife and three children, all of whom work in the German Embassy.
“It is with deep sadness and consternation that we heard the sudden death of the German ambassador to China, Prof. Dr. Jan Hecker, experienced,” a statement by the foreign ministry said.
