Steelers Acquire CB Ahkello Witherspoon From the Seahawks

The Pittsburgh Steelers bolstered their defensive backfield.

The Steelers have acquired Ahkello Witherspoon from the Seattle Seahawks, according to NFL Network Insider Ian Rapoport.

According to NFL Network’s Tom Peliserro, the Steelers acquired the cornerback in exchange for a 2023 fifth-round pick.

The information was eventually validated by the team.

Witherspoon played with the San Francisco 49ers during his first four seasons. He appeared in 11 games in 2020, starting four of them, recording an interception, four passes defensed, and 20 tackles.

This offseason, the Seahawks signed Witherspoon to a one-year, $4 million contract that was fully guaranteed.

After the Seahawks acquired Sidney Jones in a trade, Witherspoon was assigned to a backup role. The depth chart currently has D.J. Reed, Tre Flowers, and Jones at the top. Instead, the Seahawks traded him to the Pittsburgh Steelers, saving $1.5 million in base salary and gaining a future pick for the odd-man-out.

The 6-foot-2, 26-year-old Witherspoon joins Joe Haden, Cam Sutton, James Pierre and Justin Layne in the Steelers corner crew.
